Burbank 5th Grader Gerardo Gomez helps raise money for needy

In the spirit of the season last week, Gerardo Gomez, a 5th grader from Burbank, thought of all of his blessings and reasons to be thankful.

While reflecting on this, he thought of all those less fortunate, those who wouldn’t have a Thanksgiving. He decided that he’d use his remaining birthday money, $30.00, to purchase as much food as he could afford and distribute it to the homeless people downtown.

He enlisted the help of his uncle, and together, they bought 30 McDonalds cheeseburgers, 30 Gatorades, and 30 bags of chips.

He assembled his meals together into bags and passed out the 30 bags to complete strangers downtown. He described the experience as “really awesome” and said he loved “helping the people.”

Ms. Shannon had this to say about her student, “I can’t say I know very many 10 year olds — or adults — with such empathy, compassion, and generosity towards others to even think about doing something like this!! Anyone who knows Gerardo knows that he exhibits these qualities all the time. In my eyes, Gerardo is a true star student.”
